Miniature art has been made for over 2500 years in many cultures and is prized by collectors. A piece could often be made on the back of a playing card. Smaller pieces of art were given in intimate gift exchanges to family members and friends to capture a historical or religious happening, commemorate celebrations, illustrate manuscripts, or just chronical everyday events. These often private gifts allowed artists more freedom to create beyond conventional norms.
