PRESENTATIONS
Dramatizing Folktales: Story Theatre
with Julia Elaschuk
“They were terrific plays. I think they were better this year than last year. I hope next year you can do even better.”
-Lori Grade 4 bilingual student
A series of Story Theatre productions featuring Ukrainian folk tales was initiated and directed by Julia Megley (Blazuk) Elaschuk in 1979 to celebrate the International Year of the Child sponsored by the Provincial Executive of the Ukrainian Women’s Association of Canada. The legacy of the productions remains as several of the folk tales were adapted and taped by ACCESS, and are now available on u-tube.
A quintessential folk tale “Pan Kotsky” will be the featured example in the presentation. This folktale made in onto a Ukrainian postage stamp in 2022 acknowledging the value of folktales to culture.
Shumka’s Mosquito’s Wedding: Behind the Scenes with Leda Tarnawsky
A dancer in Shumka, Leda performed Shumka’s Mosquito’s Wedding across Canada.
Shumka’s Mosquito’s Wedding (All We Need Is Love) was a new dance production inspired by the traditional Ukrainian folktale. The 50-minute all-ages dance theatre production featured a number of insect characters from various regions of Ukraine. The dance lexicon, musical compositions, and sets, costumes and props are associated with these ethnographic regions. The theme of the production was poignant- being one of acceptance, diversity, and overcoming stereotypes.
Feyeria Bandura Group
Oksana Kolomiiets with Andriana Slavych, Anna Dimnych, and Sofia Stolyarenko will perform 4 lullabies and one instrumental piece.
Feyeria Bandura Group is a collective united by a love for Ukrainian heritage. They strive to popularize their culture and Ukrainian heritage, as the bandura is a cult Ukrainian instrument. The collective is filled with bright, talented girls and boys who came from Ukraine after the start of the full-scale war, as well as Canadians of Ukrainian descent.
