Dennis P Yowney

Dennis Peter Yowney was born, with his twin David, in Athabasca, Alberta. He completed a heavy-duty mechanic ticket at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Edmonton. From there he went on to receive his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, majoring in painting and sculpture.

Currently, he holds the teaching position of Lead Artist and Art Educator at an arts center in central Edmonton the Nina Haggerty Center for the Arts (NINA).

The concept of family connections to the past is an important theme in Yowney’s paintings. His childhood was entrenched in the industry of mixed agriculture surrounded by the wild Boreal forest and lively Eastern Slavic culture. His early artistic influences were his father, a musician and active Ukrainian community member, and his grandmother who was skilled in traditional Ukrainian folk art.

Yowney now paints from his studio in Edmonton where he continues to participate within the arts community.
