Materiality of the Vinok
Join Josée Chartrand and MaryAnn Baziuk on an exploration of Shumka’s vinok.  A staple in virtually all female Ukrainian Dance costumes, the vinok headpiece embodies the essence of the art form while reflecting the career of the dancer who wears it.  This presentation will examine symbolism and traditions behind a series of vinoks designed for and used by Shumka dancers and analyze the materiality of these beloved costumes.

Pandemic, but Make it Fashion: Ukrainian Embroidered PPE in the Time of COVID-19
This talk explores embroidery in the post-maidan landscape of Ukraine, looking beyond the decorative elements of adorning ones’ self with beautiful clothing. Instead, it looks at the ways people decorate themselves as a form of protest and for the sake of decolonization, even during the pressing times of pandemic.
