Johann Mann

Johann Pelech Mann began weaving baskets in 2014 under the guidance of instructor, Beth Crabb, of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Beth was brought in for a number of summer weeklong workshops in Sherwood Park, sponsored by the Alberta Wildlife Carving Association. Johann made several baskets at those workshops and grew to love the craft. She also spent two days with Jill Choate in Idaho weaving a basket incorporating deer antlers. Johann has begun devising her own basket patterns but realizes that she will be a perpetual student when it comes to basket weaving techniques. Although this ancient craft has been practiced worldwide, each region seems to have unique variations in materials used, designs and structures. Almost all baskets are hand crafted and therefore lend themselves to self-expression, a very satisfying but often under-appreciated form of art that is both highly functional and beautiful. Johann’s baskets can be found in homes in Western Canada, Ontario and California.
