Ukraine’s history and contemporary reality are marked by conflict in various forms including the targeting of artists and intellectuals during the Soviet and post-Soviet period, economic breakdown accompanying the fall of the Soviet Union, revolutions, ongoing war in the Donbas region, the annexation of Crimea, the threat of far-right organizations, and danger of coming out as LGBTQIA+ to name a few. This four-part lecture series will explore how artists are engaging this context with a feminist critique. Their artwork challenges the representation of women and marginalized people, oppressive political and social structures, and the parameters of traditional art. Simultaneously, they express the desire to build ethical, just, and equal futures.
