Ukrainian Wedding Fair

Alberta Council for the Ukrainian Arts is proud to present the second annual Ukrainian Wedding Fair!  Join us on November 18, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at St Basil’s Cultural Centre to help the bride, groom, and their families get ready for your Ukrainian wedding!  There will be a vendor marketplace, workshops, fashion show, and food featured at the Ukrainian Wedding Fair.

Attend the Ukrainian Wedding Fair and enter to win a honeymoon in Ukraine!  Sponsored by Cobblestone Freeway Tours, visit their booth in the marketplace for more details about travelling to Ukraine and entering your name for a chance to win a honeymoon to Ukraine!

Marketplace | Admission by Donation

The marketplace will feature 40 vendors selling everything from catering services to traditional breads to gifts for the bride and groom!

Korovai - The Wedding Bread
10:00 - 11:30 a.m.

Do you want to learn how to make the perfect korovai?!  Come and learn from the best as they share their knowledge in baking and braiding the most beautiful korovai.  In this workshop, you will learn what it takes to prepare, braid, and assemble a gorgeous korovai for your special day.

Wedding Headpiece - Central Ukraine
1:30 - 3:00 p.m.

The vinok, is one the the many gorgeous traditions in a Ukrainian wedding.  They are beautiful and intricately woven wreaths of flowers worn on brides on their wedding day.  Come and learn with us some of the various methods of weaving the vinok.  Design and make your own vinok for your wedding day!

Dance, It’s a Tradition
3:30 - 4:30 p.m.

Join this workshop and experience the art and tradition of Ukrainian dance.  Learn what tradition Ukrainian wedding dance is all about!

Fashion Show | Free with Admission

12:00 - 1:00 p.m.

See the latest fashion trends in Ukrainian wedding dresses.  From the traditional Ukrainian wedding dresses to contemporary wedding dresses, you will see it in our signature fashion show!

Food | Cash Only Concession

10:00 a.m. - 5 p.m.

While attending the marketplace, workshops, and fashion show, you can purchase lunch from St Basil’s Cultural Centre.  You will also be able to view the beautifully decorated tables from select vendors in our Ukrainian Wedding Fair Cafe.

Signature Artist Series

Alberta Council for the Ukrainian Arts is proud to present the Signature Artist Series program, which features a new artist or group of artists in our gallery each month.

From October 6-28, Pavlo Lopata will be featured in Творчість - Creativity. This show will examine themes of linear expressionism dominate the figurative form. View these masterfully created works of romantic traditional Ukrainian imagery

Signature Artist Series


From November 3-23, Audrey Uzwyshyn, Irene Pyzyk, Pat Tymkiw, Nadia Khikhlovska, and Irina Salouk will be featured in Pottery, Fused Glass, and Jewelry Trunk Show at the ACUA Gallery & Artisan Boutique. This show will highlight each of these artisans handmade works of pottery, fused glass, and jewelry.

Folk Art Retreat and Ukrainian Folk & Cultural Fair

Join ACUA and Carvel Ukrainian Cultural Society celebrate Alberta Culture Days and Canada's 150th Birthday - Ukrainian Style! Our Folk Art Retreat and Ukrainian Folk & Cultural Fair will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m at the Carvel Hall on Saturday, September 30th.

Folk Art Retreat | 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
$90 for two workshops (morning and afternoon) + lunch

Felting Brooches | 9:30 to 12:30 p.m. Instructor: Nataliya Iashnikova

Create your own colourful flower brooch with a master felting instructor from Ukraine! This workshop will teach basic felting techniques; you will learn about different kinds of wool and different ways of felting. You will learn to stretch and shape wool to make a beautiful fashionable brooch!

Makivnyk/Poppyseed Roll | 9:30 to 12:30 p.m. Instructor: Sophia Waplak & TBA
Makivnyky or Poppyseed Rolls are traditionally made for Christmas. In this heritage culinary arts workshop, you will learn all the techniques to make your own poppyseed roll at Christmas, from preparing the poppyseed to rolling and baking this traditional treat.

Vytynanka | 1:00 to 3:30 p.m. Instructor: Myroslava Oksentiuk

Learn the traditional art of Ukrainian paper cutting. Vytynanka was used as home decor during the 19th century. Images of angels, birds, plants, and other animals are all traditionally what was cut out of paper. You will make a vytynanka that can be applied to a matte and hung in your home!

Etched Pysanka | 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Instructor: Joyce Sirski-Howell

Learn another technique in writing pysanky! Etching pysanka is similar to the traditional dye technique, using wax as a resist, but with etching you work from dark to light! Using the wax, you cover what you want to leave dark, and then the etch removes layers from the egg to a lighter colour!
